ID Logistics, a logistics operator specializing in contract logistics, has completed the expansion of the Carrefour retail chain distribution center in Bydgoszcz. The warehouse area, increased by an additional 4,800 sqm, now totals 41,700 sqm. The expansion involves extending the storage zone for items requiring low-temperature storage.
ID Logistics has been operating the Carrefour distribution center in Bydgoszcz for several years, where it is responsible for managing warehousing, storage, preparation, and distribution processes for goods to stores in the northern and western parts of Poland. The warehouse is dedicated to handling various types of items, including food products – at ambient and controlled temperatures, household chemicals, and cosmetics. Now, the facility has gained a new 'fresh' area where goods requiring low temperatures can be stored.
Sensitive food products requiring strictly controlled temperatures are stored in the fresh zone. Its expansion was necessary mainly due to an increase in the assortment and scope of fish handling, including fresh fish.
"Throughout the year, fish production is at a similar level to meat production. However, when consumption increases significantly during the holiday season, we handle up to three times more in the warehouse. Fish is an extremely sensitive and perishable item, requiring strict storage conditions at a temperature of 0-2°C. Increasing the quantity and assortment required us not only to expand the zone but also to implement additional solutions ensuring safety and high-quality warehouse service," says Anita Szewczuk, director of the distribution center in Bydgoszcz.
Additionally, fish, including imported ones, are delivered from the Bydgoszcz distribution center to Carrefour warehouses in Rawa Mazowiecka and Psary. An important task for the ID Logistics team was, among other things, preparing a delivery notification schedule, taking into account production timelines. Specialized washing and disinfection equipment has been installed in the new hall. Palomats, which are automatic pallet magazines, are also used, which not only optimized and simplified work but also increased the number of available spaces. To ensure efficient handling of the increased volume, the team responsible for fish warehouse operations has been strengthened.
"Together with our client, we are now preparing to implement special transport boxes, 'izoboxes'. These are roll containers adapted for transporting sensitive goods at low temperatures. Thanks to this, fish or meat are transported in ideal conditions for this assortment, without fear of losing quality," explains Anita Szewczuk.
During the expansion of the Bydgoszcz distribution center, special attention was also paid to properly adapting all temperature zones, depending on the requirements of individual product groups and in accordance with Carrefour's strict requirements. As a result, temperature-sensitive goods are stored in the most favorable thermal conditions for them – fruits and vegetables (4-7°C), dairy (0-4°C), meat and fish (0-2°C).
Modern and eco-friendly solutions have been applied in the facility, which increase operational efficiency while simultaneously optimizing and facilitating work. An example is the put-to-light system, which improves performance and streamlines monitoring during order picking for stores. Further benefits are associated with the use of forklifts with lithium-ion batteries, which are more efficient, easier to operate, and more ecological than those with lead-acid batteries. Their advantage is also the time saved on charging. Energy savings are ensured by the installation of photovoltaic panels on the building's roof.
ID Logistics has been cooperating with the Carrefour retail chain since 2008. It currently manages 3 distribution centers: in addition to Bydgoszcz, in Podkonice Duże near Rawa Mazowiecka (61,000 sqm, deliveries in the central and north-eastern part) and Psary (48,000 sqm, deliveries to stores and gas stations in the southern part of the country).
