Record cargo transport at Katowice Airport

In July of this year, 4,142 tons of freight were handled at Katowice Airport, which is 1,535 tons more (58.9 percent) than during the seventh month of 2021. This is the best monthly result in this traffic segment in the airport's history – the previous record came from March 2008 and amounted to 4,141 tons of cargo.

Cargo aircraft performed 3,146 take-offs and landings during this time, i.e., 1,035 more (49 percent) than during the first seven months of 2021.

- Cargo transport at Katowice Airport has been growing continuously for twenty-one months, i.e., since November 2020. A threat to this positive trend is the increasingly poor macroeconomic indicators in individual European countries and the difficult geopolitical situation in the world – admitted the president of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze), which manages the Katowice airport, Artur Tomasik.

These are factors that may cause a correction in the air freight market, which in the case of Pyrzowice may translate into a slowdown in the growth rate.

- This does not change the fact that 2022 will still be a record year at Katowice Airport. We currently forecast that at the Pyrzowice airport – for the first time in history – over 40 thousand tons of cargo will be handled on an annual basis – signaled Tomasik.

Katowice - regional cargo leader
The authorities of the Katowice airport remind that leading cargo operators in Europe have their regional bases there, including Amazon, DHL Express, FedEx, Lufthansa Cargo and UPS.

Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport is one of the largest regional airports in Poland. In 2019, a record 4.84 million passengers used it, including over 2 million in charter traffic. The forecast for 2020 assumed transporting 5.5 million travelers. Due to the pandemic, there were 1.44 million, and in 2021 – 2.32 million.

The airport remains the national leader in the charter transport segment and a regional leader in cargo transport.
